Leaky gut syndrome(LGT) is a state that is caused by several long-term health conditions. Some of the conditions that are believed to cause LGS are Multiple Sclerosis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
What is leaky gut syndrome?
Advocates of LGT claim that this is a state that is caused by conditions and symptoms that are caused by the reaction of the immune system to toxins, germs and other substances. These germs, toxins and other substances are mostly absorbed into the bloodstream through a porous bowel. The porous bowel is the leaky bowel that causes the syndrome.
Some medications and conditions can make the gut leaky, which is called an enhanced permeability of the intestines. It has not been proven if some treatments can help to limit the leakiness of the bowel. Such treatments like herbal remedies and nutritional supplements have been claimed to treat the condition though there isn’t enough evidence for this claim.
What causes the bowel to be leaky?
The inner lining of the bowel is a single layer of cells, which build up the mucosal barrier. This is the barrier between the inner of the bowel and the other parts of the body. The barrier helps to absorb the nutrients though it prevents most of the germs and large molecules from passing inside. The large molecules and germs can cause the symptom to increase.
Is some conditions, the barrier in the bowel may become leaky and less effective. Though this is not believed to cause any serious health risk. Some specialists believe that the bowel lining may become leaky and irritated due to several factors like bacteria or yeast overgrowth in the bowel. Also, a poor diet or overuse of specific antibiotics can cause the bowel to be leaky and irritated.
With the leaky gut, bacterial toxins, undigested food particles and germs may pass through. When they pass, they will trigger the immune systems and hence cause a persistent inflammation in the body.
Effects of painkillers and alcohol
Alcohol and other painkillers are believed to cause irritation in the bowel lining. When ingested, they will damage the seals that are between the cells. This allows some substances to get through the gaps and enter the blood stream. The gut condition specialists agree that the irritants will not cause anything more than a slight inflammation in specific areas around the gut. As a result, there will be a slight improvement if you quit drinking alcohol and taking the specified medication.
Now you know what leaky gut syndrome is, and what are the major causes of the condition.
